The treatment
What deep tissue massage actually is
Deep tissue massage works through the deeper layers of muscle and the fascia that surrounds them. The distinguishing feature is not brute force but pace. Pressure is applied slowly enough that the tissue releases rather than braces against it, which is why a good deep tissue session often feels firm but not violent.
That matters because most persistent tightness is not a single knotted muscle. It is a pattern: one area is restricted, something else compensates, and the pain eventually shows up somewhere entirely different. Tight hip flexors can present as lower back pain. Restricted thoracic movement can present as neck and shoulder ache. Treating only where it hurts tends to buy a few days of relief before the pattern reasserts itself.
So every deep tissue massage at Reset starts with working out which restriction is driving the problem, and treatment is aimed there.
Is it for you?
Who it helps
- Gym-goers and lifters carrying accumulated tightness through hips, hamstrings, lats and thoracic spine
- Runners and cyclists with chronically tight calves, quads, IT bands and glutes
- Anyone with long-standing tension that returns within days of a lighter, relaxation-focused massage
- People recovering from an old injury where scar tissue and guarding have left lasting restriction
The process
What happens in a session
Assessment
We talk through your symptoms, training, previous injuries and what you want back, whether that is a pain-free morning, a return to running, or simply turning your head properly. Then we look at how you actually move.
Treatment
Slow, progressive deep tissue work through the restricted areas, combined where useful with myofascial cupping, assisted stretching and trigger point work. Pressure is continuously calibrated to what your tissue will accept. You should be able to breathe normally and hold a conversation throughout.
Aftercare
You leave with a personalised plan sent to your phone: the stretches, strengthening work and practical changes that will keep the tension from rebuilding. A massage that is not followed by anything tends to be a temporary fix.
Straight answer
Does deep tissue massage hurt?
It should be intense in places, not painful. There is a useful distinction between the “good ache” of a restriction releasing and sharp, bracing pain. The second is counterproductive, because a muscle that is defending itself will not let go.
Pressure is adjusted throughout and you are in control of it. Some people feel mild soreness for a day afterwards, much like the day after a decent training session. If firm pressure genuinely does not suit you, myofascial cupping achieves a similar release by decompressing the tissue rather than pressing into it, and it is included in your session where it is the better option.
Compare
Deep tissue or sports massage?
They overlap heavily, and in practice most sessions here use both. The honest distinction:
| Deep tissue massage | Sports massage | |
|---|---|---|
| Main aim | Release long-standing tension and restriction | Support training, recovery and performance |
| Typical client | Persistent tightness, postural imbalance, old injuries | Runners, gym-goers, athletes, event prep |
| Emphasis | Slow, deep, focused manual work | Assessment, movement, stretching, aftercare |
| Price | £65 / 60 min, £90 / 90 min | £65 / 60 min, £90 / 90 min |
You do not need to pick correctly when booking, because the session is built around what the assessment finds. Read more on the difference between sports and deep tissue massage, or see sports massage in Tunbridge Wells.
